The Original 4 all started the season with high hopes to claim the inaugural Hoover Bowl. The season started out well for most teams as OR, CoF, and GIWI all took turns at the top at the table within the first half of the season. Career worst seasons from a number of MM’s top players, including Alex Ovechkin and Dany Heatley (MM’s top two picks) had this team languishing at the bottom for all of the first half.
Around the halfway mark however fortunes changed for two of the teams in the league. Firstly MM and CoF completed a blockbuster with Heatley, Nash, and Kaberle moving to CoF and Perry, Ryan, and Boyle returning to MM. While this trade had marginal consequences in the regular season its effects were substantial in the playoffs. Secondly OR’s two superstars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin both suffered season ending injuries. The result saw OR plummet to the bottom of the standings finishing the second half of the season winless in 12 straight weeks (0-10-2).
After a hard fought battle throughout the regular season GIWI edged out CoF for the top seed and the right to a glorified first round bye against the hapless OR. As a result the other playoff matchup involved the return of 5 players facing off against there former teams (Kaberle was cut in favour of Kris Letang). CoF, entering as the higher seed and favourite, endured 3 point barrages by E. Staal, Ovi, Getzlaf, and former CoF’ers Perry and Ryan on opening night and was never able to recover as MM’s Anaheim trio had monster weeks. The resulting 6-3 defeat left CoF in the losers bracket against OR (6-2 loser to GIWI) and propelled MM into an unlikely date with the leagues best team. Both teams traded heavy blows the entire week and miraculously entering the final day MM held a microscopic 4-3 lead. The only category in debate was shots, MM held a two shot advantage going in with only Loui Eriksson and Mike Ribiero left to play. GIWI in turn countered with Dustin Byfuglien and Brad Richards. Alas the Cinderella story fell short as Byfuglien and Richards led GIWI to a two shot advantage and the inaugural Hoover Bowl.
