Sam Bennett Pulls Up to Top Spot

The 2014 HBHL Entry Draft came and went Sunday night and with the first overall pick in the draft, Stammer Time did not hesitate to take 6’0″ 180lb  left wing Sam Bennett of the Kingston Frontenacs.  Bennett, who was in constant top-3 discussion during the 2013-14 season, lead the Frontenacs in scoring with 36 goals and 91 points in a  57 game campaign and added 9 points in 7 games versus Peterborough before getting ousted in overtime by the Petes.  Although a clear offensive juggernaut, his on-ice skill was overshadowed during the combine when off-ice, he was unable to accomplish 1 pull-up.  “The day hockey is measured in pull-ups is the day they become official HBHL apparel” said GM Bradley Matsuba.  With that being said, this may show more of Bennett’s desire and compete than his skill – but only time will tell if Bennett can move past the pull-ups and put on the big boy pants.

There was little surprise with the rest of the HBHL draft. Perhaps Aaron Ekblad of the Barrie Colts could have gone sooner but with Sam Reinhart, Michael Dal Colle, Leon Draisaitl and Nikolaj Ehlers coming in ahead of him, 6th overall is not a bad spot to be in for the NHL-ready blueliner. Below are the results of the draft based on team. For an ordered list of the draft, see 2014 Entry Draft.
