Power Rankings:
1. Getting Iggy With It – LM 3
The rebuild is over. GIWI has started to pull away from the rest of the league, and with the addition of superstar Evgeni Malkin, GIWI is a force to be reckoned with. While GIWI has fewer wins than 2nd place MM, their advantage in points as well as victory in their last head to head meeting give GIWI the advantage.
2. Mr. Momentum – LM 1
Still in second despite only one loss on the season, MM can’t seem to put their opponents away. Despite their inability to blow teams out, MM is still a dangerous team. They rank among the leaders in both offensive and goaltending stats; they also recently set both the goals and ppp records. Their early season trade for Backstrom provides them with a potent one-two punch with Ovechkin and barring a meltdown this team should remain a contender throughout the season.
3. Girouxsome Twosome – LM 4
GT has picked it up in recent weeks and is comfortably in the three spot for these power rankings. The chasm between the top three and bottom three is growing every week and if the bottom teams aren’t careful there could be a threeway race for the last playoff spot sooner rather than later. After finishing the first month with league worst offensive stats GT has vaulted to league leaders. Despite a major shakeup which saw the influx of the Sedins and the exodus Malkin and Tavares, GT keeps chugging along. Always dangerous GT looks to be a contender again.
4. Chance of Fleury’s – LM 5
Since breaking their epic, record breaking slide, CoF has more wins than losses. They stunned league leader GIWI as well as ST and OR, their two closest rivals, pulling them closer to a playoff spot. That being said CoF still has both the worst offensive and goaltending stats. While it’s possible that the bottom will fall out from under this team eventually, they hold a slight lead over OR in these rankings due to a head to head win in their most recent matchup as well as well as the acquisition of franchise cornerstone John Tavares.
5. Optimus Reim – LM 6
OR continues to be wildly inconsistent this season. perhaps the only thing keeping them from a slide to the basement is better than average goaltending. It’s tough to envision this team as a playoff team however ST’s rapid decline has opened the window for them to squeeze in. OR’s next three matchups are against the top three teams in the league; their ability to navigate through it will say a lot about this teams chances.
6. Stammer Time – LM 2
What. Has. Happened… Once thought of as an invincible unstoppable juggernaught, ST has lost 6 in a row. The team everyone used to fear is now merely clinging onto a playoff spot. While most thought the Hoover Bowl finals curse had chosen OR as its next victim, ST’s slide argues otherwise. ST can perhaps take solace in the fact that they have suffered a rash of injuries, including to superstar Stamkos. Can this team right the ship before it’s too late.
